A team of five people developed a game in 48 hours using Unreal Enigne 4 to create a 3rd person platformer. The objective of the game is to collect all of the limbs so that the teddy bear can escape from the toy box.
The theme for the Global Game Jam 2016 was “ritual”. During our design phase we decided to make our game around the theme on its most basic level, a ritual is an event triggered by completing a series of pre-defined steps. This was then combined with the design decision to create non-demonic themed game formed the base for what eventually became “What The Fluff?!”
As the programmer within the team, my role was to use Blueprint scripting to develop the mechanics and logic for the game. This included;
- the win and lose state
- item pickups
- keyboard and controller support.
- Towards the end of the project I also imported the assets created by other team members (including 3D models and textures) to replace the placeholder assets and achieve the final version of the game.
The biggest challenge with the Global Game Jam is the shortage of time to both design and develop the game. Within the 48 hour limit we created a fully functioning playable level with the mechanics described above.
